Relaunch Success Stories

"I had an unusual career trajectory.  I started out as a clinical social worker, with an MSW, but then left the field and worked in different business positions before having my daughter.  I then left the workforce entirely, soon relocating from Boston to Fort Worth, Texas where my husband took a job as a professor.  While in Fort Worth, I started a part-time MBA program, but then we moved to Chicago when my husband got a new job. , I was able to transfer to the University of Chicago Booth School of Business to finish my MBA in their part-time program.  I heard about the May 2008 Chicago Career Relaunch Forum from the University of Chicago Women's Business Group and decided to attend.  I had been out of the workforce for five years and was nervous about being able to find a good marketing position, especially since the economy was deteriorating. At the Forum, it was really helpful to meet other people going through the same transition I was. Within a few months, I obtained an internship that was posted on the Chicago Booth  job board at Whitney Automotive Group, the largest online retailer of auto parts in the country.  The company then offered me a fulltime job, and I was recently promoted after completing my MBA in December 2009."

Note: The Wall Street Journal's Sue Shellenbarger quoted Erika in her February 17, 2010 article about adjusting to returning to work fulltime: "[My husband has had to take a hit on his career, to a certain degree, to make room for mine." The adjustment is "probably harder for him than for me."  To read the full article, click here.
